If you love the water, it’s surfer haven for those that love to hit the waves and is a quaint harbor city with a good sized population that isn’t overbearing. The city is named after Richard Henry Dana, Jr., who is the author of Two Years Before the Mast. Dana described the harbor city and neighboring city of San Juan Capistrano as “the only romantic spot on the coast”. Plus the average temperature around here is 70 degrees with the lowest being 65 in winter months. So essentially we are located in what we like to call the best city in California (and we wouldn’t have it any other way)!
The Half Way Point
Since we are in Orange County, there’s plenty to do here. We’re smack dab in the middle of Los Angeles and San Diego, making Dana Point a convenient place to stay. Thirty miles north you’ll hit Disneyland and California Adventure. Thirty miles south and you’ll find yourself in San Diego where you can visit Sea World and Legoland.
If you love sports, The Los Angeles Angels, Ducks, LA Clippers, Kings, and Dodgers are all a stone’s throw away in Los Angeles or Anaheim for the Ducks. Let’s not forget David Beckham’s new soccer home in LA Galaxy and college football and basketball fans. USC and UCLA campuses are both located in Los Angeles.

Beaches
Dana Point has three beaches to offer you.
Capistrano Beach: A stretch along the scenic coast of southern Dana Point. Capistrano offers volleyball, basketball, cycling, and other beach activities. During the summer, a concession stand offers fishing gear, food and beverages, and beach supplies. You can always find something to do at Capistrano.
Doheny State Beach: Switching gears, you have Doheny State Beach which has over a mile of sandy coast to enjoy and some of the best swimming and surfing in California. During low tide, Doheny becomes an excellent beach to study and explore tide pools. Did we mention there’s even a campground?
Salt Creek Beach: Another popular surfing location. A small, offshore reef creates some of the best left swells along the entire shoreline. Swimming, body surfing, sunbathing, tide pool exploration, rocky promontories, and sheer cliffs. You can always find something for everyone to enjoy at Salt Creek.
