Huntington Beach, CA:

The most popular part of the Huntington Beach area is the coastline itself, specifically the Huntington Beach Pier.

First built in 1904, the Pier conveniently connects the downtown shopping area to the shore, where visitors have a great view of the water, their choice of fun novelty stores, and even the one and only Ruby’s Diner, the pinnacle of 50s nostalgia.

This is the perfect spot for hanging out with friends, going on casual-yet-still-romantic dates, or even spending some peaceful time alone. Click here for more information.

History

Huntington Beach’s history goes back a long ways, as it was first “settled” and inhabited by the Tongva people, or Gabrielinos. The people’s land reached all the way to the Topanga Canyon and Aliso Creek in Laguna Beach. The area was not settled by Europeans until the 1780s when Spanish Soldier, Manuel Nieto, obtained a land grant of 300,000 acres, which he called Rancho Los Nietos.

In the 1800s, however, a large portion of the land was purchased by Col. Robert Northam, who, instead, used the area to grow his barley. Near the end of the 1800s, the area was newly named Shell Beach and had become home to a small community of settlers.

It wasn’t until businessman, P.A. Stanton, who purchased 40 acres along the beach, and 20 on either side of Main Street, changed Shell Beach’s name to Pacific City after he expanded the land in 1901. In 1909, Huntington Beach was officially incorporated and received its name, which came from the Huntington Beach Company, a real-estate development business that was owned by Henry Huntington. It wasn’t until the oil boom of the 1920s, however, that Huntington Beach began taking its first steps toward becoming the area that it’s known as today.

According to the 10 Facts About website, Huntington Beach was commandeered by the military during World War II. A canon was set up at the end of the pier and the beach was used as a look-out post for submarines. For more cool facts about Huntington Beach, click here.
