History
The name “Laguna Niguel” is taken from the Spanish word “Laguna,” which means lagoon, and the word “Nigueli,” which was the name of a Juaneno Indian village near Aliso Creek.
Previously called “Rancho Niguel,” the area primarily served as a sheep ranch under San Juan Capistrano resident Juan Avila until 1865. In 1895, the Moulton Company gained ownership of Rancho Niguel.
The city was formally established by the Laguna Niguel Corporation in 1959, which made it one of California’s first master planned communities. Avco Community Developer obtained the Laguna Niguel Plan in 1971 and began developing land according to the original master plan.
Before becoming part of Orange County, the Laguna Niguel Homeowner Association (later known as the Laguna Niguel Community Council) advised the Orange County Board of Supervisors regarding land use.
This laid the foundation for Laguna Niguel’s incorporation into Orange County on December 1, 1989, marking the beautiful city as the 29th city to join Orange County.
